FERSI column: Safe Automated Driving Needs Smarter Roads

In a new column, FERSI member Markus Deublein from the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) argues that safe automated driving cannot be achieved by smarter vehicles alone. Drawing on a wide body of European research on connected and automated mobility, he identifies eight key priorities for infrastructure — from managing the risks of the mixed-traffic transition phase to building robust digital safety layers and ensuring cross-border interoperability. His central message is clear: roads must evolve from passive surfaces into active, intelligent partners, and when safety and efficiency come into tension, it is safety that must set the direction.

13th Young Researchers Seminar will be held in Riga (2-4 June 2027)

The five Supporting Organisations – ECTRI, FEHRL, FERSI, EURNEX and HUMANIST – are pleased to announce that the 13th Young Researchers Seminar (YRS) will take place from 2–4 June 2027 in Riga, hosted by the Transport and Telecommunication Institute (TSI).

The Young Researchers Seminar is a long-standing initiative aimed at supporting early-career researchers in the transport field, offering a unique opportunity to improve scientific communication skills, receive feedback from experienced scholars, and build an international research network.

The event will bring together young researchers from the member organisations of the five supporting networks, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration across different transport domains. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with peers and senior researchers in an inspiring academic environment, further strengthening the European transport research community.

More information about previous editions of the Young Researchers Seminar is available at this link.
