FERSI CONFERENCE – 6 & 7 October 2022

The Hague, The Netherlands

Implementing evidence-based road safety measures
Removing barriers and enhancing public support

Road traffic crashes remain an issue in most European countries. Road crashes result in high material and immaterial costs both for the victims and their loved ones, and for society. Nevertheless, there are many proven, very effective measures for improving road safety which are ready to be implemented in a cost-effective way. Still, they are not yet implemented, with political barriers or a lack of societal urgency between the main reasons.

FERSI is organising a two-day conference for researchers, policy makers and road safety professionals from road authorities and road safety observatories but also professionals otherwise involved in road traffic and road safety (enforcement, engineering, consultancy, education). The conference will allow for discussion on promising ways to facilitate the decision making and implementation process of proven (cost-)effective but politically sensitive road safety measures.

Scope and aim

The conference focuses on the exchange of national and regional experiences with implementing evidence-based road safety measures, both positive and negative ones. There will be a specific focus on the road to successful implementation, including overcoming the barriers encountered along the way. The overall aim is to learn from each other, providing a source of inspiration and motivation to (re)start the discussion about specific measures in our own setting.

Contributions focus on implementation of proven, highly effective measures for, combinations of, some of the world’s main road safety challenges illustrating which implementation barriers were encountered and how these were dealt with, including political barriers, legal and liability concerns or lack of public support.
