FERSI General Assembly (29-30 October 2026)

Partners meet online to exchange road safety research insights, review ongoing activities, and discuss future collaborations and strategic priorities

FERSI held its Autumn General Assembly online on 29–30 October 2026, hosted by the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics (TØI). The two-day meeting brought together representatives from member institutes to exchange research insights, review organisational activities, and discuss ongoing collaborations and future priorities for the European road safety research community.

The first day opened with presentations from the host institution, TØI, addressing changing perspectives in road safety research and the impacts of cycling injuries on sick leave, disability, and workforce participation. The morning continued with updates from the Executive Board, legal and administrative matters, and the presentation of the proposed 2027 budget.

A substantial part of the programme was dedicated to research activities and knowledge exchange among FERSI members. Contributions covered a wide range of topics, including proactive safety (BASt, Germany), road safety research and innovation projects (SWOV, Netherlands), traffic optimisation and orchestration through the CARMONY project (CERTH, Greece), bicycle safety (VIAS, Belgium), and Traffic Safety Culture (KFV, Austria). Further presentations addressed road infrastructure safety and digital assessment tools (KTI, Hungary), the influence of visual and auditory warnings on vulnerable road users (VTT, Finland), and the use of bus sensor data for preventive safety and road maintenance (LNEC, Portugal).

The afternoon also featured a presentation of the Bulgarian State Agency for Road Safety’s (SARS, Bulgaria) methodology for municipal road safety management, updates on the new TARS project activities concerning cross-border enforcement, road safety Key Performance Indicators, and network-wide road safety assessments, as well as a report on FERSI’s Working Group on Africa.

The second day focused on networking, dissemination, and future opportunities. Members discussed the FERSI Exchange Programme, preparations for the next FERSI Conference, ongoing EU-funded road safety projects, and upcoming funding opportunities. An update on FERSI’s communication activities was also presented, followed by a round-table discussion involving all participants.

FERSI warmly thanks TØI for hosting the General Assembly and all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions, continued collaboration, and commitment to advancing road safety research across Europe.
